Even with record-breaking mobile usage, Pakistan’s app development sector decelerated in 2024. The number of active developers declined by 26%, with only around 1,400 creators remaining in the market.

Android app releases also went down by 55% to a mere 1,700. A total of 2,500 new apps were released, which included 1,053 games and 784 iOS apps. The figures indicate that even though users are more engaged than ever before, local innovation and app development are losing steam.

TikTok and CapCut Drive Pakistan’s App Downloads

In terms of popularity, TikTok led app charts in Pakistan with 32.4 million downloads. CapCut (27.1M), Facebook (24.3M), and WhatsApp (22.7M) came in second place.

WhatsApp Business also took off, with 20.9 million installs, highlighting great interest from small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Tamasha emerged as Pakistan’s leading entertainment streaming app with 10.2 million downloads, ahead of Netflix (3.7M) and Tapmad (2.5M).

Pakistan Bodes Better than Regional Markets

Pakistan exhibited one of the fastest growth rates in app downloads in Asia. The Country outranked Indonesia (8.6%), the Philippines (1.2%), and Mexico (1.2%).

Vietnam and Egypt experienced drops of 13.6% and 1.7%, respectively, making Pakistan a regional digital growth leader.

Global Mobile Trends: AI and Ad Spending Soar

Globally, mobile subscribers downloaded 136 billion applications and spent 4.2 trillion hours on their phones. Mobile advertising expenditure reached $195 million, while in-app purchases totaled $150 billion.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications turned into an international rage, garnering 1.49 billion downloads and raking in $1.27 billion in revenues — marking the increasing popularity of AI-based applications across the world.

Challenges Ahead for Pakistan’s App Creators

Experts observe a mixed picture for Pakistan’s mobile tech market. As user interaction continues to rise, the falling number of developers and new app releases indicate trouble in financing, competencies, and monetization.

Nonetheless, with a youthful population, growing internet penetration, and high mobile interaction, Pakistan is still a rich soil for digital innovation — if local innovators are supported and provided more opportunities.
