Apple is said to be redesigning the Camera Control button for the new Apple iPhone 18. Previous rumors indicated that the button would be eliminated altogether, but a fresh leak says Apple is rather streamlining the part to save on costs
What is camera control button?
Today, the iPhone 16 has a sophisticated setup comprising both capacitive and pressure sensors under a sapphire crystal cover. Capacitive detects gestures, and pressure sensors react to presses, taps, and swipes. For the iPhone 18, Apple will leave the capacitive sensor and use pressure sensitivity only.
Why is Apple removing the camera control button?
The streamlined button remains in experimental production, and the new design would accommodate all types of input through only pressure sensors—just like on phones such as the OPPO X8 Ultra and vivo X200 Ultra, which employ pressure-sensitive buttons to differentiate between multiple touch levels without additional hardware layers.
The primary reason for this transition seems to be cost. The existing Camera Control button is costly to manufacture and hard to repair, which contributes to Apple’s internal cost issues. Coupled with delayed deployment of AI-driven visual features, these have reportedly compelled Apple to simplify the hardware of the iPhone 18.
